Swimming

1959 - 1960

The series of swimming figures which followed in the early 1960′s were inspired by a scholarship stay in Greece in 1955 and resulted in a large fountain commissioned for Hatfield New Town.  Swimming' 1959-60 was the first in the series and was bought by the Tate Gallery in 1960.

'A particularly complicated essay in spatial relationships between three linked figures, where all volumes appear refracted and distorted'.

Dennis Farr, Former Director of the Courtauld Institute Collection
